The Nigerian equities market ended last week on a bearish note as widespread profit-taking wiped about N1.9 trillion from investors’ holdings, reversing the strong gains recorded during the previous trading week.
Investors had gained N3.73 trillion on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) penultimate week, but the market came under significant selling pressure last week as investors reduced their positions across several major sectors.
Banking, industrial goods, consumer goods, oil and gas, and insurance stocks were among those affected, while several highly liquid stocks that had driven the earlier market rally also recorded declines.
The NGX market capitalisation fell to N157.587 trillion from N259.558 trillion recorded at the end of the previous week.
Similarly, the NGX All-Share Index (ASI), one of the market’s key performance indicators, declined by 1.6 per cent to close at 243,052.74 points, compared with 246,992.44 points recorded penultimate week.
Trading activities on the NGX ended the week with total transactions across equities, bonds and exchange-traded products (ETPs) valued at approximately N130.73 billion.
Analysts said the broad-based sell-off suggested that investors were not merely responding to company-specific developments but were actively reducing their exposure and securing profits after the market’s strong year-to-date performance.
The sharp decline in market breadth also reinforced the negative sentiment, with only a small number of stocks attracting buying interest while losses spread across much of the exchange.
The market decline occurred as investors increased portfolio repositioning ahead of the Dangote Refinery Initial Public Offering (IPO), which is scheduled to open for public subscription on September 14, 2026.
Analysts said the offer could emerge as a major liquidity event for the domestic market as investors seeking to participate may raise funds by reducing their existing stock positions.
This could place additional selling pressure on stocks that have recorded substantial gains in recent months.
Commenting on the market’s performance and outlook, analysts at InvestData Consulting Limited said the Dangote Refinery IPO could have a notable impact on market liquidity.
“The Dangote Refinery IPO adds another layer to the liquidity outlook. ‘‘Investors looking to participate in the offer may reallocate funds from existing holdings, creating additional pressure on stocks with weaker near-term catalysts. The impact could become more visible as the subscription date approaches.
‘‘However, the current correction does not necessarily signal a fundamental deterioration in the Nigerian equity market. Corporate earnings, domestic liquidity and improved investor participation remain important medium-term drivers.
The NGX is likely to remain volatile in the near term as investors balance profit-taking against the market’s underlying fundamental outlook.
‘‘The upcoming Dangote Refinery IPO could remain an important source of portfolio repositioning, while movements in crude oil prices, corporate earnings expectations and domestic liquidity will continue to influence sentiment.”
The analysts’ outlook suggests that the recent decline may represent a market correction rather than a fundamental weakening of the Nigerian equities market.
Corporate earnings, domestic liquidity and continued investor participation are expected to remain important factors shaping the market in the medium term, while oil prices and expectations around corporate performance could also influence investor sentiment.
