The planned Initial Public Offering (IPO) of Dangote Petroleum Refinery could give Nigerians an opportunity to move beyond being consumers of petroleum products and become shareholders in one of the country’s major industrial assets.
President and Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, made this known in Lagos on Wednesday, describing the proposed listing as more than a financial transaction.
According to Dangote, the IPO would allow Nigerians to directly participate in the value generated by a refinery that is becoming increasingly important to the country’s economy.
He noted that millions of Nigerians rely on refined petroleum products every day for transportation, manufacturing, logistics, power generation and other economic activities.
“Every day, Nigerians use products that depend on refined petroleum. What makes this IPO unique is that it gives people the opportunity not only to consume but also to participate as owners in the industrial system that powers economic life,” Dangote said.
He said strategic infrastructure had traditionally remained out of reach for many ordinary Nigerians, arguing that the IPO could expand public participation in productive assets.
“When a businessman transports goods, when a farmer moves produce to the market, when a manufacturer powers production, when families travel across the country, energy plays a role. The refinery supports these activities. Through the IPO, Nigerians can now have a direct stake in the value being created,” he added.
Dangote’s comments come as plans for the refinery’s proposed public listing generate interest over the possibility of Nigerians becoming investors in the country’s largest oil refining project.
