FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has declared that former Rivers State governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, is unfit to serve as Nigeria’s Vice President.
Wike made the statement on Wednesday during his monthly media parley in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he launched another criticism of his longtime political rival.
The former Rivers governor alleged that Amaechi undermined the judiciary while serving as governor, arguing that Nigerians should examine the records of politicians seeking sensitive public offices before deciding whether they are suitable for such positions.
“Rotimi Amaechi, who wants to be Vice President today, once shut down the courts in Rivers State and caused a pregnant woman to give birth in prison,” Wike alleged.
Wike said actions that allegedly affected the independence and functioning of the judiciary should not be overlooked simply because a politician is now seeking another constitutional office.
The FCT minister maintained that the past conduct of political figures should form part of the public assessment of their suitability for leadership positions, particularly when they present themselves as defenders of democracy and constitutional governance.
Wike also criticised the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), accusing the professional body of abandoning its traditional responsibility to defend the rule of law and judicial independence.
“The Nigerian Bar Association has now taken sides politically. They are now a political party,” he declared.
He questioned the NBA’s decision to provide platforms for politicians whose past actions, according to him, raised concerns about their commitment to democratic institutions.
Wike insisted that the NBA should remain an independent professional body focused on justice, constitutionalism and the protection of the rule of law, rather than becoming involved in partisan political contests.
