The Rivers State Police Command says it has detained some officers following the alleged shooting and killing of a commercial driver in Port Harcourt.
The command’s spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, disclosed this on Friday, saying the incident occurred on Thursday after an altercation between the driver, identified as Anthony Obodo, and a police officer.
According to Agabe, the disagreement escalated into a scuffle, during which an officer allegedly fired a shot that struck Obodo and killed him. Two other passers-by were also reportedly injured.
The alleged shooter, Cpl. Alfred Louis, was subsequently attacked and injured by an angry mob, according to the police. He is currently receiving medical attention.
Agabe said Louis and other members of his team have been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) while investigations continue.
“The investigation will establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the law.”
The police spokesperson condemned the killing and said the alleged conduct did not reflect the level of professionalism expected from officers.
She also assured the public that any officer found guilty of unlawful or unethical conduct would face disciplinary action.
“The command will not shield any officer engaging in unethical and unlawful conduct that brings the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute.”
The incident reportedly sparked protests across parts of Rivers State on Friday, prompting the deployment of additional police personnel to affected areas to restore order and prevent further unrest.
