The Kano State Government has declared Tuesday, September 1, 2026, a work-free day to allow residents to observe Takutaha, an annual traditional occasion celebrated across the state.
The declaration was contained in Circular No. 7/2026, signed by Permanent Secretary, Establishment, Abba Danguguwa, on behalf of the Head of Service.
According to the circular, the holiday coincides with 19th Rabi’ul Awwal, 1448 AH, and was approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The state government described Takutaha as an occasion of significant cultural importance to Kano and an important part of its Islamic heritage.
Residents Urged to Pray for Peace
The government encouraged residents to use the occasion for prayers and spiritual reflection, particularly for peace, unity, stability and prosperity in Kano State and Nigeria.
It also urged people to celebrate peacefully and use the occasion to strengthen community relationships and promote peaceful coexistence.
Essential Services to Continue
All heads of ministries, departments and agencies were directed to ensure compliance with the work-free-day directive.
However, the government clarified that essential services will remain operational under existing arrangements to ensure critical public services are not disrupted.
The directive was circulated to senior government officials, including commissioners, permanent secretaries, heads of boards and commissions, local government authorities and chief executives of state-owned agencies and companies.
The work-free day is expected to give residents across Kano the opportunity to observe Takutaha while maintaining essential government services.
