Imo State has recorded a major milestone in healthcare after doctors successfully performed the state’s first robotic-assisted surgery at the Specialist Hospital, Umuguma, Owerri.
The procedure was carried out by a medical team led by Professor Kingsley Ekwueme, who described the operation as a complete success and highlighted the benefits of robotic technology in treating localized prostate cancer.
Ekwueme explained that the technology allows surgeons to remove cancerous tissues while helping preserve important functions, including urinary and erectile control.
“The success rate of robotic surgery for cancer, especially prostate cancer, is phenomenal,” he said.
He stressed that patients undergoing prostate surgery should not have to experience prolonged incontinence or loss of sexual function when modern surgical techniques can help reduce such complications.
Governor Hope Uzodimma, who witnessed the procedure, described the development as a major step towards making quality and affordable healthcare available to residents of the state.
The governor said the facility would not only provide treatment but also support early detection and disease prevention through routine medical check-ups.
Uzodimma disclosed that the hospital operates through a public-private partnership, with most of its funding coming from the private sector. According to him, the arrangement would help ensure the facility remains sustainable and maintains quality management.
He also encouraged residents to enrol in the Imo State Health Insurance Scheme, saying this would make advanced medical treatment more accessible and affordable.
