A coalition of opposition leaders and stakeholders under the G100 platform has congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his re-election, describing the outcome as a model opposition groups should consider ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja and signed by Salihu Moh. Lukman, the group praised Adeleke and the people of Osun State, saying their determination had played a major role in the election outcome.
G100 urged opposition leaders seeking a change in Nigeria’s political direction to replicate what it described as the courage, restraint and willingness to compromise demonstrated during the Osun election.
“Osun has shown the pathway. The task now is to take that spirit of cooperation to the national stage.”
The coalition also commended opposition candidates and party leaders who put aside their individual ambitions and supported Adeleke during the election.
According to G100, their decision showed that the broader democratic interest could sometimes take priority over personal and party ambitions.
“The significance of what has happened in Osun goes far beyond the re-election of one governor. Osun has provided a template for 2027.”
The group said Nigeria’s opposition was not necessarily lacking popular support but had been weakened by divisions among different political groups.
It argued that the Osun election demonstrated the strength that could be achieved when opposition parties agree on a common objective and consolidate their support behind a candidate.
G100 noted that the candidates who withdrew from the race and backed Adeleke had the right to pursue their individual ambitions but instead chose what they considered a broader political objective.
The coalition urged opposition leaders to ask what outcome would best serve Nigerians and strengthen the country’s democracy.
It further called for a broad-based opposition alliance capable of presenting Nigerians with a credible alternative in the 2027 general elections.
