The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into an allegation that officers attached to the Okpella Police Division demanded and collected ₦1 million from some young men in exchange for their release.
The allegation surfaced in a video circulating on social media, where the young men claimed they were arrested by the police, accused of cultism and allegedly forced to pay the money before they were released.
Police officers summoned
Following the allegation, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Patrick Daaor, ordered an immediate investigation into the incident.
The officers allegedly involved have reportedly been identified and directed to report to the Command Headquarters to assist with the investigation.
The police have also invited the alleged victims to appear before the investigating team and give their accounts of what happened.
Police promise action if officers are found guilty
CP Daaor said allegations involving extortion, misconduct and abuse of police authority would be treated seriously.
He assured the public that any officer found responsible after the investigation would face appropriate disciplinary measures in line with the law.
The Command also encouraged members of the public to report cases of harassment, extortion or other unprofessional conduct by police officers through the Complaint Response Unit.
The police said genuine complaints against its personnel would not be ignored and urged citizens to come forward with relevant information when such incidents occur.
