Two security operatives have been killed after gunmen ambushed a joint security patrol along the Ganawuri–Sabon Gida Road in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, with the attackers reportedly fleeing with the victims’ service rifles.
According to security sources, the attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when four operatives drawn from two different security formations mounted a roadblock along the route as part of routine security operations.
The sources said the officers later began returning to their respective duty posts after completing the operation. However, two of the operatives failed to arrive, prompting their colleagues to launch an immediate search.
The search team later discovered the bodies of the two missing personnel at the scene of the attack. Their service rifles were reportedly missing, although the motorcycle used during the patrol was recovered.
Following the deadly ambush, security agencies launched a cordon-and-search operation across nearby communities in an effort to track down the attackers and recover the stolen weapons.
As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the slain operatives had not been officially disclosed by the authorities.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Plateau State Police Command and Operation Enduring Peace were unsuccessful, as calls and inquiries to their spokespersons were yet to receive a response.
The latest attack adds to growing security concerns in parts of Plateau State, where security forces continue to battle armed criminal groups and other violent attacks.
