Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have successfully repelled an attempted terrorist attack on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Kasuwan Daji, Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, rescuing nine abducted civilians during the operation.
The development was disclosed in a statement by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army/Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, who said the troops inflicted heavy casualties on the attackers, forcing them to retreat.
According to the Army, the attack occurred at about 1:40 a.m. on August 2, 2026, when terrorists attempted to infiltrate the military base under the cover of darkness.
However, troops on duty detected the movement of the attackers early and responded with coordinated firepower, successfully preventing the terrorists from breaching the facility.
The military said the intense resistance forced the gunmen to abandon their mission and flee the area in disarray.
Following the failed attack, additional troops were deployed to reinforce the base, after which security personnel launched a pursuit of the fleeing terrorists, who had abducted several residents from nearby communities during the incident.
The follow-up operation resulted in the successful rescue of nine kidnapped civilians, who were recovered unharmed.
Despite the success, the military confirmed that the operation recorded casualties among security personnel.
“Regrettably, one Army officer and one Police officer paid the supreme price during the heavy firefight. Additionally, two soldiers sustained gunshot wounds and were promptly evacuated by air for advanced medical care. Both personnel remain in stable condition,” the statement said.
Lt. Col. Osoba stated that troops have since secured and dominated the area while exploitation operations continue to determine the full extent of the terrorists’ losses and ensure the safety of surrounding communities.
He described the failed attack as another major setback for terrorist groups operating in the North-West, noting that intensified military operations have continued to limit their ability to launch coordinated assaults against security forces.
The Army spokesperson also dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that six security personnel were killed during the attack.
According to him, only one Army officer and one Police officer lost their lives during the operation.
He reaffirmed that Operation FANSAN YAMMA remains committed to sustaining offensive operations against terrorist groups, protecting vulnerable communities and restoring lasting peace and security across the North-West.
