The Accord Party has described the August 15 Osun State governorship election as a major test of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) preparedness for the 2027 general election, urging the electoral body to deliver a free, fair and credible poll.
In a statement issued on Monday, the party’s National Chairman, Maxwell Mgbudem, said the upcoming election offers INEC an opportunity to restore public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
“To INEC as the electoral umpire, the Osun governorship poll is a litmus test of its readiness for the 2027 general election. There should be no excuse for poor performance, including any form of glitches,” Mgbudem said.
He urged both INEC and security agencies to remain neutral before, during and after the election, stressing that the credibility of the poll depends on protecting the sanctity of the ballot.
“Every vote must be counted and count in the overall result, and the people’s wish, will and mandate respected by all stakeholders,” he stated.
Mgbudem also advised the electoral commission to thoroughly test all election materials and systems to avoid technical failures that could undermine the credibility of the exercise.
The Accord chairman further appealed to voters not to engage in vote-buying or sell their votes for financial gain.
“No serious political party or candidate will indulge in the reprehensible vote trading,” he said.
He urged the people of Osun State to support Governor Ademola Adeleke for another term, arguing that the governor’s performance in office has earned him the confidence of many residents.
According to Mgbudem, Adeleke’s style of governance has improved the welfare of the people and positioned the state for continued development.
The Osun governorship election is scheduled to hold on August 15, with political parties intensifying campaigns ahead of the poll.
