The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned Nigerians applying for U.S. passports and visas against submitting AI-generated or digitally edited passport photographs, warning that such images will be rejected.
In a reminder posted on its official X account on Friday, the mission advised applicants to ensure their passport photos are recent, authentic and accurately reflect their current appearance.
“Reminder! Do NOT use AI or digital editing tools on your passport photo. We will not accept photos that are edited or filtered,” the embassy stated.
The mission explained that passport photographs must have been taken within the last six months and should closely resemble the applicant to enable easy identification by U.S. immigration officials.
“Your photo should be recent (taken within the past six months) and look like you (the TSA or CBP agent must be able to tell it’s you),” the statement added.
The embassy also warned that submitting digitally enhanced or AI-edited photos could delay the processing of passport applications.
“Submitting a digitally enhanced photo will significantly delay your application,” it said.
Applicants were encouraged to follow the U.S. Department of State’s official passport photo guidelines to avoid unnecessary delays or rejection of their applications.
