Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the growing hardship across the country, saying insecurity, hunger, and poverty continue to worsen under the current administration.
Obi made the remarks while speaking at the funeral service of the late Okaji Simon Okorie Abaa, father of NDC Ebonyi South Senatorial candidate, Hon. Linus Okorie, in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Addressing a large crowd at the event, the former Anambra State governor urged Nigerians to remain committed to protecting their votes in the 2027 general election, saying the country’s future depends on electing leaders who can address its pressing challenges.
“Nigerians are already being harassed—not just my supporters. Hunger is harassing everybody. The worsening economic situation is affecting everyone,” Obi said.
He added that the suffering being experienced across the country is evident in both rural and urban communities, urging citizens to demand accountability from those in government.
On the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Obi said Nigerians should focus on ensuring their votes count rather than relying solely on the electoral body.
“It is not really about confidence in INEC; it is about having confidence in the people. If Nigerians insist that their votes must count, then their votes will count,” he stated.
Obi also questioned the country’s current direction, saying poverty and hunger continue to increase and calling on Nigerians to reflect on the future they want for the next generation.
Away from politics, Obi paid tribute to the late Okaji Simon Okorie Abaa, describing him as the father of a longtime political associate. He prayed for God to grant the deceased eternal rest and comfort his family during the difficult period.
