Dangote Cement Plc has announced plans to acquire an additional 1,500 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks as part of its efforts to reduce carbon emissions, improve logistics efficiency and strengthen its sustainability commitments across Africa.
The company said the expansion of its alternative-energy transport programme is aimed at integrating sustainability into its operations while creating long-term value across the 10 African countries where it operates.
According to Dangote Cement, the new CNG-powered trucks will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, cut reliance on diesel-powered vehicles and improve the efficiency of its logistics operations.
The company explained that the initiative forms part of its broader sustainability strategy, which focuses on reducing environmental impact, improving energy efficiency, promoting diversity and inclusion, supporting host communities and driving responsible business growth across the continent.
Dangote Cement also announced that it recently earned an upgraded ‘B’ rating from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) in recognition of its climate and water management efforts.
Speaking on the company’s sustainability agenda, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Arvind Pathak, said sustainability remains at the heart of Dangote Cement’s operations.
“At Dangote Cement, sustainability is not a standalone initiative; it is embedded in the way we operate, invest and grow. As we expand our footprint across Africa, we remain committed to reducing our environmental impact through cleaner energy sources, improved operational efficiency and innovative logistics solutions such as our growing CNG-powered fleet,” Pathak said.
He added that the company is committed to supporting Africa’s infrastructure development while minimising its environmental footprint.
“Our responsibility is not only to produce quality cement but to do so in a way that minimises emissions, conserves resources, protects the environment and delivers meaningful benefits to our host communities,” he stated.
Beyond environmental sustainability, Dangote Cement said it continues to strengthen corporate governance and social responsibility, noting that its Board has 28 per cent female representation and directors from seven different nationalities.
The company also stated that its sustainability initiatives are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a focus on responsible industrialisation, climate action, economic growth and community development.
