Marvel Studios has officially announced Black Panther 3, revealing that British actor David Jonsson will take over the next chapter of Wakanda’s story as an adult Prince T’Challa II.
The major announcement was made during San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where director Ryan Coogler appeared alongside Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige to unveil new details about the highly anticipated sequel.
Marvel confirmed that Black Panther 3 is scheduled to hit cinemas on December 15, 2028.
Jonsson, best known for his roles in Alien: Romulus and Industry, will portray the grown-up Prince T’Challa II, the son of the late King T’Challa, originally played by the late Chadwick Boseman.
Boseman’s performance in the 2018 blockbuster turned Black Panther into one of Marvel’s most beloved heroes before the actor passed away from colon cancer in 2020.
Instead of recasting the role, Marvel paid tribute to Boseman in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) by allowing Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, to become the new Black Panther.
Fans first met Prince T’Challa II during the emotional mid-credits scene of Wakanda Forever, and his return as an adult signals the beginning of a new era for the Wakandan kingdom.
Joining Jonsson in the upcoming film are returning stars Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, who reprises his role as M’Baku.
Coogler also revealed that Black Panther 3 will make history as the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film to be shot entirely on large-format celluloid film, promising a visually stunning experience, especially for IMAX audiences.
The director explained that the movie will serve as a major standalone chapter following the events of Avengers: Secret Wars, which is expected to be released in December 2027.
Before then, Marvel’s upcoming theatrical slate includes Spider-Man: Brand New Day, arriving on July 31, 2026, followed by Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026, which will feature Robert Downey Jr.’s debut as Doctor Doom.
The announcement has generated excitement among Marvel fans, with many eager to see how Jonsson carries forward the legacy of one of the franchise’s most iconic characters.
