Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has reassured the public that safety remains the top priority of Enugu Air following Thursday’s runway excursion involving one of the airline’s aircraft at Benin Airport.
In a statement personally signed on Friday, Governor Mbah expressed sympathy for the 63 passengers and five crew members aboard Enugu Air Flight 4264, which veered off the runway after landing at Benin Airport.
He thanked God that the incident did not result in any loss of life or injuries.
“The government empathizes with the 63 passengers and five crew members on board the aircraft over the traumatic experience and is thankful to God that no life was lost and no injuries have so far been reported,” Mbah said.
The governor also praised the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) for promptly launching an investigation into the incident.
According to him, the Enugu State Government will ensure that the airline fully cooperates with investigators and all relevant regulatory authorities.
“The government commends the swiftness of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) in embarking on the ongoing investigation… The government will ensure the full cooperation of Enugu Air with the investigation and regulatory authorities,” he stated.
While awaiting the outcome of the investigation, Mbah assured passengers that Enugu Air’s operations are built on strict safety standards.
He explained that the airline places passenger safety above profit and operational schedules, adding that its internal quality assurance systems exceed industry benchmarks.
“The airline is founded on a corporate culture that places safety above profit and schedule… Enugu Air will continue to serve its customers while maintaining its utmost commitment to safety, professionalism and hospitality,” he said.
The governor also thanked Nigerians for the overwhelming support shown to the airline since the incident.
He noted that many passengers had continued to share positive experiences about flying with Enugu Air, describing the public’s solidarity as encouraging.
“We wish to express our profound gratitude to Nigerians for the outpouring of solidarity since the unfortunate incident,” Mbah added.
The runway excursion occurred on Thursday, when an Embraer E170 operating Flight 4264 from Lagos overshot the end of the runway while landing at Benin Airport.
The NSIB has since confirmed that all 68 people on board were safely accounted for and has commenced a full investigation into the incident.
