A senior White House official has revealed that President Donald Trump’s administration would be happy to see England lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy if the United States fails to win the tournament.
Andrew Giuliani, who serves as President Trump’s representative for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, said England has what it takes to become world champions and described such an outcome as a memorable storyline during America’s 250th Independence anniversary celebrations.
Speaking in an interview with the Daily Mail, Giuliani said that if the US cannot win the competition on home soil, England would be his preferred choice.
“If the United States can’t win on our 250th birthday, then a great storyline would be the English coming to America and winning during our anniversary celebrations,” he said.
He also referenced England’s long wait for another World Cup title, expressing hope that the team could finally end decades of disappointment.
Giuliani praised England captain Harry Kane and midfielder Jude Bellingham, describing them as key players capable of leading the Three Lions to glory.
According to him, Kane’s goals could be the deciding factor if England eventually wins the tournament.
He also revealed that President Trump has followed Kane’s career closely and has a genuine interest in football, partly influenced by his son, Barron Trump.
Giuliani recalled a previous golf outing involving Trump and former England striker Wayne Rooney, saying the US president has a good understanding of the sport.
Meanwhile, Harry Kane recently confirmed that he once played golf with President Trump in Florida after receiving a personal invitation.
The England captain described the experience as unique and admitted he was impressed by Trump’s golfing skills.
Kane said he was grateful for the opportunity and joked that he hopes to play golf as well as Trump when he reaches the president’s age.
With the World Cup entering its decisive stages, England remains one of the favourites to lift the trophy, while supporters continue to hope the team can end its long wait for another world title.
