At least eight people, including three children, have been killed in a suspected terrorist attack on a rural community in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, according to the police.
The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, confirmed the incident on Sunday, describing the attack as a deliberate act of terrorism.
According to him, the victims included five adults and three children, while security personnel spent hours in the affected community to restore calm and assess the situation.
The commissioner said the attack triggered protests by angry youths, leading to temporary disruption in the area.
“We have been in the interior since morning. Some people were killed, and the youths became violent. We have been engaging them, and they have now agreed to reopen the road,” he said.
Nwadiogbu explained that investigations are ongoing to determine whether the latest attack is linked to previous incidents recorded in the area.
However, he maintained that the assault was “purely a terrorist attack.”
According to the police commissioner, the attackers used guerrilla tactics, striking the community before fleeing into nearby forests, making it difficult for security operatives to apprehend them.
“They operate in the guerrilla warfare style. Once they attack, they immediately disappear into the woods,” he added.
He assured residents that security agencies have intensified efforts to track down the perpetrators and prevent further attacks in the community.
