President Bola Tinubu has approved the conversion of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa, in a move aimed at strengthening technical education and supporting Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
The approval was announced in a statement on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said the decision aligns with the administration’s commitment to human capital development and economic diversification.
According to the Presidency, the upgrade followed a proposal by Senator Ahmed Aliyu, representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District, who advocated for a specialised institution to maximise the state’s rich mineral resources and contribute to Nigeria’s industrial development.
The newly approved university will focus on training professionals in mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing and emerging technologies, while promoting research, innovation and value addition in the mining sector.
The Presidency said the institution is expected to produce the skilled workforce needed to drive sustainable development and technological advancement in Nigeria’s solid minerals industry.
“The approval reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to aligning Nigeria’s tertiary education system with national development priorities under the Renewed Hope Agenda by establishing specialised institutions that address the country’s economic needs and leverage its competitive advantages,” the statement read.
President Tinubu has also directed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other relevant agencies to begin the legal and administrative processes required to implement the conversion.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in education as a key driver of economic growth, innovation, job creation and national development.
