President Bola Tinubu has forwarded the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026 to the Senate, seeking lawmakers’ approval to strengthen the administration, governance and overall management of public senior secondary education across Nigeria.
The proposed legislation is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the country’s education system and enhance the effectiveness of institutions responsible for overseeing senior secondary education.
The President’s request was conveyed in a letter read during Thursday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Bill Approved By Federal Executive Council
In the letter, Tinubu informed the Senate that the amendment bill had already received approval from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) during its meeting held on April 30, 2026, and was now being presented to the National Assembly for legislative consideration.
According to the President, the primary objective of the bill is to strengthen the administration and governance of public senior secondary education nationwide.
“The purpose of the bill is to strengthen the administration and governance of public senior secondary education in Nigeria,” Tinubu stated.
Tinubu Seeks Stronger Education Governance
The President explained that the proposed amendment aligns with his administration’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s educational institutions and promoting better governance in the education sector.
He noted that strengthening the National Senior Secondary Education Commission would help improve the quality of education and support the country’s long-term development goals.
“In consequence of the above, the desire of this administration to strengthen the educational institutions in the national interest, the National Senior Secondary Education Commission Amendment Bill, 2026, is forwarded for legislative action by the National Assembly,” the letter read.
President Requests Speedy Passage
Tinubu appealed to senators to give the bill accelerated consideration to enable the proposed reforms take effect as quickly as possible.
“While it is my hope that the Senate will consider the bill and grant it expeditious passage, please accept, Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration and personal regards,” the President wrote.
Senate Begins Legislative Process
Following the reading of the President’s letter, Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred the proposed legislation to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for further legislative action.
Akpabio directed the committee to review the bill and report back to the Senate within one week for further consideration by lawmakers.
If eventually passed by the National Assembly and signed into law, the amendment is expected to strengthen the operations of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission and improve oversight of public senior secondary education across Nigeria.
