The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested six suspects following the mob killing of two travellers who were wrongly accused of theft in Gidan Kalu Village, Birnin Yero, near Maraban Jos.
The victims, identified as Muhammadu Sani, 45, and Aliyu Mohammed, 40, were said to be travelling on a motorcycle to Tudun Wada, Zaria, to visit a sick relative when they were attacked on July 1, 2026.
According to the police, some residents became suspicious after seeing the pair riding a new motorcycle and raised an alarm, accusing them of stealing the bike.
The two men reportedly abandoned the motorcycle and fled in fear but were chased by an angry mob, which caught up with them and beat them to death despite their repeated pleas of innocence.
Police spokesperson DSP Mansir Hassan said officers from the Birnin Yero Division quickly responded to the incident and arrested one Abdullahi Mukailu Kigo alongside five other suspects.
He added that the suspects are currently in police custody, while investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest other individuals involved in the killing.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, strongly condemned the mob action, describing it as unlawful and barbaric.
“Everyone found culpable will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the commissioner said.
He also warned residents against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that mob justice is a criminal offence.
The police boss urged members of the public to report suspected criminals to security agencies instead of resorting to violence, reminding Nigerians that every suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
