South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has hinted that he could reconsider his decision to step down following Bafana Bafana’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 74-year-old Belgian made the revelation after South Africa’s heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Canada in the Round of 32, saying it would be unwise to make major decisions while emotions were still high.
“It is not clever to make decisions when you are disappointed, so I will not do it here,” Broos said.
Before the tournament, Broos had announced plans to retire from coaching after more than three decades in football, explaining that he wanted to spend more time with his family.
“I want to spend more time with my wife, children and grandchildren,” he had earlier told AFP.
However, reports from within the South African Football Association suggest the experienced coach may remain involved with the national team, either as head coach or in another technical capacity.
Since taking charge in 2021, Broos has transformed South Africa’s fortunes, guiding the team back to the World Cup after a 16-year absence and leading Bafana Bafana to their first-ever appearance in the knockout stage.
Reflecting on the defeat to Canada, Broos admitted his players struggled to match their opponents’ physical strength and pace.
“Modern football is more than just technique. There is power and speed, and we do not have it in our team yet. Canada had those qualities,” he said.
While South Africa’s World Cup journey has ended, the team will now shift attention to qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, where they have been drawn alongside Kenya, Guinea and Eritrea.
