The Federal Government has invested more than N217 billion in medical education and healthcare training over the last two years as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this while speaking at the inaugural International Conference of the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Lagos (UNILAG).
According to him, the investment is aimed at improving medical training, expanding infrastructure and boosting the quality of healthcare education across the country.
“Over N217 billion has been committed to strengthen medical education and healthcare training in Nigeria.”
Alausa explained that over N97 billion was invested in medical education interventions in 2025, while an additional N120.5 billion was approved in 2026 for infrastructure upgrades, equipment procurement and the expansion of teaching facilities.
The minister also announced plans to establish medical simulation and technology centres nationwide to provide students with modern practical training that meets international standards.
He noted that innovations such as artificial intelligence, genomics and precision medicine are transforming healthcare globally and should be integrated into Nigeria’s medical education system.
Alausa further highlighted the Federal Government’s approval of the National Research and Innovation Development Fund (NRIDF), which is expected to provide sustainable funding for research, innovation and scientific discoveries.
“The fund will support research, innovation and the commercialisation of discoveries across universities and research institutions.”
The minister commended the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences at UNILAG for its contributions to medical research and healthcare innovation, while also praising its N1 billion endowment fund initiative.
The conference brought together medical experts, researchers, policymakers and development partners to discuss emerging trends in diagnostics, therapeutics and patient-centred healthcare.
