Paraguay midfielder Miguel Almiron has become the first footballer to receive a red card under FIFA’s newly introduced rule targeting players who cover their mouths during on-field confrontations.
The historic incident occurred during Paraguay’s Group D clash against Türkiye when Almiron was shown a straight red card after appearing to cover his mouth while speaking to Turkish defender Mert Müldür.
The decision came in first-half stoppage time and was later confirmed following a VAR review.
FIFA introduced the rule earlier this year as part of efforts to tackle discriminatory, abusive, and offensive language on the pitch.
Under the regulation, players who intentionally cover their mouths with a hand, arm, or shirt while communicating during confrontations can face immediate dismissal.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Paraguay managed to hold on and secure victory after taking an early lead in the match.
The rule was introduced following previous controversies involving players accused of hiding comments from cameras and match officials during heated exchanges.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino had defended the measure, arguing that players who are not saying anything inappropriate should have no reason to conceal their mouths while speaking.
Almiron’s dismissal now goes down as the first official enforcement of the regulation since it was introduced.
