The Federal Government has said Nigeria’s long-term prosperity and economic growth will largely depend on how effectively the country embraces and deploys digital technology.
The position was made known by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during the Digital Transformation Summit 2026 held in Abuja.
Akume, who also serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Galaxy Backbone Limited, described digital innovation as a major catalyst for national development and called for stronger cooperation among all levels of government to drive Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.
The summit, which coincided with the 20th anniversary of Galaxy Backbone, brought together government officials, technology experts, and industry stakeholders to discuss the future of digital governance and innovation in Nigeria.
According to Akume, technology is no longer optional but has become essential for improving governance, boosting economic competitiveness, and enhancing public service delivery.
“The future of governance will be digital. The future of economic competitiveness will be digital. The future of public service delivery will be digital,” he said.
The SGF noted that President Bola Tinubu’s digital transformation agenda aligns with the administration’s Renewed Hope programme, which focuses on innovation, transparency, efficiency, and economic development.
He stressed that achieving meaningful digital transformation would require strong infrastructure, strategic partnerships, innovation, and institutions capable of delivering services on a large scale.
Akume also commended Galaxy Backbone for its role in providing digital infrastructure, cybersecurity solutions, connectivity, cloud services, and secure networks that support government operations across the country.
“The digital infrastructure already exists. The expertise exists. The partnerships exist. What is required is greater collaboration, stronger adoption, and a shared commitment to accelerating digital transformation at every level of government,” he stated.
He further urged state governments, public institutions, and ICT agencies to take advantage of available digital infrastructure to improve governance and service delivery.
The SGF expressed confidence that continued investment in digital technology would help Nigeria become more connected, innovative, competitive, and prosperous in the years ahead.
