Russian tennis sensation Mirra Andreeva has etched her name into the history books after capturing her first-ever Grand Slam title with a commanding victory at the French Open.
The 19-year-old defeated Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to claim the women’s singles crown at Roland Garros.
With the triumph, Andreeva becomes the youngest French Open women’s champion since Monica Seles in 1992 and the first player born after 2005 to win a Grand Slam title.
The victory marks the biggest achievement of the young star’s career so far, adding a Grand Slam trophy to her growing collection, which already includes two WTA 1000 titles.
Despite the defeat, Chwalinska’s remarkable run in Paris also captured attention. The Polish player battled through qualifying and won nine matches to reach the final, becoming the first qualifier in the Open Era to make the French Open women’s singles final.
Her impressive performance is expected to significantly boost her ranking, moving her from world No. 114 to inside the top 25.
The final itself was filled with tense moments as both players struggled with nerves and challenging windy conditions early in the match.
However, Andreeva gradually found her rhythm, taking control with powerful baseline play and impressive composure beyond her years.
The Russian teenager dominated the second set and moved within touching distance of the title before Chwalinska briefly fought back to delay the celebrations.
But Andreeva quickly regained control, sealing victory with a stunning backhand winner before collapsing to the clay in celebration of her historic achievement.
The win confirms Andreeva’s status as one of tennis’ brightest young stars and signals the arrival of a new force in women’s tennis.
