Dangote Petroleum Refinery has recorded a major milestone after increasing its crude oil processing capacity to 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), exceeding its official design capacity of 650,000 bpd.
The achievement was confirmed during a performance test carried out by the refinery’s process licensors, further cementing its status as the world’s largest single-train refinery.
According to the company, the development reflects the refinery’s strong engineering design and growing operational efficiency as it continues to ramp up production.
Speaking on the breakthrough, Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, revealed that plans are already underway to expand the refinery’s capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day within the next 30 months, a move expected to place the facility among the largest refining complexes globally.
Edwin said the expansion would strengthen Nigeria’s energy security, reduce dependence on imported petroleum products, and boost the country’s position as a major exporter of refined products.
Since commencing fuel production in 2024, the refinery has steadily increased output of petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and other petroleum products, supplying both local and international markets.
Its products are currently exported to several African countries as well as destinations in Europe, including the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. The refinery has also supplied gasoline to the United States and jet fuel to Saudi Arabia.
The company noted that the refinery has become a critical player in stabilising fuel supply, especially amid global energy market disruptions, while helping Nigeria reduce its reliance on imported fuel and easing pressure on foreign exchange demand.
Looking ahead, the planned expansion is expected to create more jobs, stimulate industrial growth and improve Nigeria’s trade balance. The refinery also plans to boost the production of industrial raw materials such as LPG, polypropylene and Linear Alkylbenzene (LAB) used in manufacturing detergents, packaging materials and consumer goods.
