Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has assured residents that efforts are ongoing to secure the safe release of the schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Ogbomoso, urging citizens to remain calm and support rescue operations.
Speaking while addressing protesters in Ibadan, including members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and other stakeholders, Makinde said this was not the time for blame games but a moment for unity and collective action.
The governor stressed that security agencies at both the state and federal levels have been working tirelessly since the abduction, revealing that he has held several meetings with security operatives, sometimes multiple times in a day, to monitor rescue efforts.
According to him, the kidnappers are dangerous criminals who should not be underestimated, adding that government is doing everything within its power to ensure the victims return home safely.
Makinde appealed to teachers, students, parents and residents to trust the government and avoid actions that could distract from ongoing operations. He warned against divisions and urged everyone to remain focused on supporting efforts aimed at rescuing the victims.
His comments come amid growing concerns over the fate of the abducted students and teachers, whose captivity has sparked protests and an ongoing teachers’ strike in Oyo State.
The governor, however, expressed confidence that the victims would be rescued, assuring families that government remains committed to bringing them back safely.
The abduction, which occurred on May 15 in Oriire Local Government Area, claimed the lives of an assistant headmaster and a motorcyclist, while dozens of students and teachers were taken away by gunmen. Days later, one of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was reportedly killed by his captors, triggering nationwide outrage.
