Fresh drama has emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after a faction aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike dismissed reports that former President Goodluck Jonathan would be formally endorsed as the party’s presidential candidate.
The faction, led by Abdulraman Mohammed, described the planned convention reportedly scheduled by the Tanimu Turaki-led group as unauthorized and misleading.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, insisted that no organ of the PDP had approved any convention or meeting aimed at affirming Jonathan as the party’s flag bearer.
According to him, the reports were designed to create confusion within the political space and mislead party supporters ahead of the 2027 elections.
Mohammed stressed that the party had already completed its statutory primary elections for various elective positions, including the presidential ticket, in line with electoral regulations and internal party guidelines.
He maintained that any gathering or process outside the officially recognized party structure should not be regarded as a legitimate PDP activity.
The PDP spokesman further called on former President Jonathan to publicly distance himself from the proposed convention, saying such a move would help preserve the integrity of the democratic process and protect his reputation.
He also urged security agencies to investigate those behind what he described as false political activities carried out in the party’s name.
According to him, the party would not tolerate actions capable of bringing its image into disrepute or creating unnecessary political tension in the country.
The development comes after reports emerged that the Turaki-led Interim National Working Committee had scheduled a special convention in Abuja to ratify Jonathan as its presidential candidate ahead of the next general election.
Meanwhile, as of the time of filing this report, the former president has not publicly confirmed any intention to contest the 2027 presidential election or responded to the claims made by either faction.
The latest disagreement highlights the growing internal divisions within the PDP as political alignments continue to take shape ahead of the next electoral cycle.
