The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has launched a fresh attack on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, accusing the Federal Government of pushing Nigeria deeper into economic hardship, insecurity and rising poverty.
The opposition party vowed that it would work to “rescue Nigeria from the abyss” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC reacted strongly to recent comments made by President Tinubu against opposition parties following his emergence as the APC presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
According to the ADC, the President’s criticism of the opposition shows a disconnect from the harsh realities millions of Nigerians are currently facing daily.
The party claimed the country is experiencing one of its most difficult periods in recent history, with worsening hunger, rising inflation, insecurity, business collapse and growing frustration among citizens.
“If the opposition is going to take the country backwards, it would be to reset it from the edge of the dangerous precipice that the current administration has placed it on,” Abdullahi said.
The ADC argued that continuing on the current path would only push the country further into economic and social crisis.
The party also referenced projections suggesting that nearly 35 million Nigerians could face acute food insecurity in 2026, insisting that many families can barely afford basic meals due to soaring food prices and shrinking incomes.
“It is both ironic and tragic that a government under whose watch nearly 35 million Nigerians are now projected to face acute food insecurity in 2026 would accuse the opposition of lacking ideas or vision,” the statement added.
According to the ADC, insecurity across farming communities has further worsened the food crisis, as many farmers can no longer safely return to their farms because of bandit attacks, kidnappings and violence.
The party also noted that businesses are shutting down daily under mounting economic pressure, while millions of Nigerians continue to struggle with rising living costs.
The ADC insisted that Nigerians are no longer interested in political speeches or blame games, but are demanding practical solutions to their problems.
“Why is food unaffordable? Why are businesses collapsing? Why are citizens increasingly unsafe? Why are more Nigerians falling into poverty despite endless promises of reform and recovery?” the party questioned.
The opposition party further raised concerns about the outcome of the APC presidential primary where Tinubu reportedly secured 10.99 million votes.
Describing the figure as “bizarre” and “laughable,” the ADC alleged that the result could be part of attempts to prepare Nigerians psychologically for possible manipulation ahead of the 2027 elections.
“In a process designed for President Tinubu to contest against himself, one may be tempted to dismiss the figure as laughable if it were not recognisable for what it truly represents,” Abdullahi stated.
The ADC warned that Nigeria cannot continue on what it described as a dangerous path of economic decline, institutional weakness and growing hopelessness.
The party maintained that Nigerians deserve leadership focused on improving lives rather than retaining political power.
“Nigerians deserve competent leadership, compassionate governance, and a government that understands that power exists to improve lives, not merely to retain control,” the statement concluded.
