Fresh political drama has emerged in Kano after a top aide to Governor Abba Yusuf alleged that former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is indirectly working to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election ahead of the 2027 polls.
The Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Kano Government House, Sunusi Tofa, made the claim during an interview on Arise News on Wednesday.
According to him, ongoing political alignments and behind-the-scenes engagements suggest that some opposition figures may eventually strengthen Tinubu’s chances in 2027.
“Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is indirectly or strategically working towards President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid,” Tofa alleged.
He further claimed that Governor Abba Yusuf had reportedly approached President Tinubu over plans to defect to the APC with Kwankwaso’s approval, adding that former Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo was also allegedly involved in the move.
Tofa also downplayed the political strength of Labour Party’s Peter Obi in Kano, insisting that the state’s political culture may not favour him.
“Political acceptance in Kano is shaped by ideology, history and regional considerations,” he said.
The Kano Government House spokesman additionally dismissed claims that millions attended a recent political gathering at Kwankwaso’s residence.
“Kwankwaso’s residence cannot accommodate more than 2,000 people,” he stated, describing reports of five million attendees as exaggerated.
Kwankwaso, founder of the influential Kwankwasiyya movement, remains one of the North’s biggest political figures after contesting the 2023 presidential election on the NNPP platform.
His political structure was widely credited for helping Governor Yusuf win the Kano governorship election in 2023, although reports of growing tension between both camps have continued to fuel speculations over the future of their alliance ahead of 2027.
