Cristiano Ronaldo is set to make football history after being included in Portugal’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first male player ever to appear in six World Cup tournaments.
Portugal confirmed their final squad on Tuesday, with the 41-year-old forward once again leading the national team despite his age, extending a legendary international career that continues to break records.
Ronaldo’s inclusion had been widely expected, but it officially marks another historic milestone for the Portuguese captain, who already holds the men’s records for most international appearances and goals.
Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez also used the squad announcement to pay an emotional tribute to former international Diogo Jota.
“He is our strength, our joy. Losing Diogo was an unforgettable and very difficult moment, but the very next day it was up to all of us to fight for Diogo’s dream and for the example he always set in our national team,” Martínez said.
He added, “Diogo Jota’s spirit, strength and example are the plus one and will always be the plus one.”
Ronaldo is expected to play a major role in Portugal’s campaign, although Martínez is likely to carefully manage the veteran forward’s playing time throughout the tournament.
Portugal’s squad also features several top stars including Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, João Félix, Rafael Leão, and Gonçalo Ramos as the country hopes to finally turn its talented generation into World Cup glory.
With expectations high, Portugal will be aiming for a deep run at the tournament as Ronaldo prepares for what could be the final World Cup appearance of his iconic career.
