The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Olakunle Nafiu, has advised corps members to adopt disciplined lifestyles and prioritise financial stability.
He urged them to avoid unnecessary luxury and focus on building sustainable futures during and after their service year.
Nafiu gave the advice while addressing corps members at the NYSC orientation camp in Kaduna State.
During his visit, he encouraged participants to live within their means, develop a strong saving culture, and avoid spending beyond their financial capacity.
He stressed the importance of time management, urging corps members to make productive use of their service year rather than engaging in unproductive activities.
The NYSC boss also highlighted the importance of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, describing it as a key initiative designed to equip young Nigerians with practical and income-generating skills
According to Nafiu, corps members who fully participate in SAED training stand a better chance of becoming self-reliant after completing their service.
He noted that the programme not only prepares participants for personal financial independence but also positions them to create job opportunities for others.
He further revealed that the NYSC has partnered with various stakeholders to provide support for corps members interested in starting businesses.
This support includes access to low-interest loans, grants, and starter packs to help them launch small-scale ventures.
Nafiu advised participants to begin with modest investments and grow their businesses gradually over time.
As part of the visit, the Kaduna State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Efeke Dadaza, presented a report on activities at the orientation camp.
She disclosed that a total of 2,896 corps members had been registered, including those deployed directly to Kaduna State and others relocated from the Federal Capital Territory.
According to her, the corps members have adjusted well to camp life and are actively participating in orientation programmes.
The message from the NYSC leadership highlights the importance of financial discipline and skill development among young Nigerians. By focusing on self-reliance and smart financial habits, corps members are better positioned to build stable and productive futures beyond their service year.
