Abia APC Allocates 2027 Ticket to Abia Central Zone
The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially zoned its 2027 governorship ticket to the Abia Central Senatorial District, a move aimed at promoting balance, fairness, and inclusiveness within the party.
The announcement was made by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, in a statement released to journalists in Umuahia, the state capital. According to the statement, the zoning decision is intended to provide clear direction to party members and prospective aspirants as the process for the purchase of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms gets underway.
The party explained that the decision aligns with its long-standing commitment to equity, justice, and fair representation across Abia State’s three senatorial districts. It emphasized that since Nigeria’s return to democratic governance in 1999, the state has informally adhered to a power rotation arrangement among the zones to ensure unity and a sense of belonging for all regions.
Providing further justification, the APC noted that the current state party chairman is from Abia North, while Abia South produced the immediate past governor. In light of this arrangement, the party concluded that it is both logical and equitable for Abia Central to produce the next governor under its platform.
“This decision reflects our dedication to fairness and balanced representation. It is only right that Abia Central is given the opportunity to produce the next governor on the APC platform,” the statement read.
The development has been welcomed by stakeholders from the zone, including a former Minister of State for Science and Technology, Henry Ikoh, who is also an aspirant for the party’s governorship ticket. Ikoh, an industrialist and businessman, described the zoning arrangement as a positive step that reinforces the principles of equity and justice, which he said are central to Abia State’s widely recognized Charter of Equity.
He expressed optimism that the decision would not only strengthen unity within the party but also enhance its chances in the 2027 governorship race.
Meanwhile, attempts to obtain reactions from other aspirants outside the Abia Central zone have so far been unsuccessful. Efforts to reach the camp of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, who hails from Abia North and is also reportedly interested in the ticket, did not yield any response at the time of filing this report.
As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the APC’s zoning decision is expected to shape the dynamics of the governorship race in Abia State and influence the calculations of aspirants within the party.
