The Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that it will fully participate in the 2027 general elections, insisting that the party remains strong despite its ongoing leadership crisis.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Thursday, the faction’s Interim National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), said the PDP has faced similar internal challenges in the past and has always emerged stronger.
He recalled the leadership dispute that led to the formation of the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee, noting that the party survived that period and remained united.
According to Turaki, the current crisis is not the most difficult challenge the PDP has experienced.
“There may be challenges here and there regarding the leadership of our party. Again, for us in the PDP, this is nothing new. We will overcome. We shall overcome. We are overcoming,” he said.
Turaki also alleged that many of the problems facing opposition political parties in Nigeria were linked to the ruling party, describing the situation as unfortunate.
Despite the internal divisions, he insisted that the PDP cannot be destroyed.
“Nobody, and I dare say, nobody can kill the PDP. PDP will continue to live,” he declared.
The former Minister of Special Duties explained that the stakeholders’ meeting was organised to brief party leaders on recent developments, including the implications of a court judgment delivered last Friday in a suit filed by the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT).
He said the interim leadership had not yet issued an official reaction to the judgment because some of its officials were outside the country or away on official assignments when the ruling was delivered.
Turaki added that the meeting would also focus on strategies for repositioning the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections.
Reaffirming his faction’s determination to contest the polls, he said the PDP would be on the ballot in every category of the election.
“The essence of every political party is to legitimately capture power. You cannot capture power unless you are on the ballot. I want to tell you that this PDP shall be on the ballot for all rounds of the 2027 elections, from the presidential election down to the State Houses of Assembly elections,” Turaki stated.
He also praised party members for remaining loyal despite the leadership crisis and urged them to stay united as the party works towards strengthening its position ahead of the next general elections.
Turaki expressed confidence that the decisions reached at the meeting would help reposition the PDP and improve its chances of success in 2027
