Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, says the state is fully prepared for the establishment of state police, insisting that the move will strengthen security and improve the protection of lives and property.
The governor made the declaration on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking at the Government House in Kano.
According to a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Yusuf said the proposed state police would work alongside the Nigeria Police Force rather than replace it.
He explained that both security institutions would share the responsibility of maintaining law and order while improving intelligence gathering and responding more effectively to security threats.
Governor Yusuf expressed confidence that Kano has the resources and institutional capacity needed to successfully operate a state police system once the necessary constitutional amendments are approved.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting every lawful initiative aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and creating a safer environment for citizens.
Speaking on the newly inaugurated task force, the governor said it demonstrates the state’s determination to tackle the growing challenges of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking through stronger collaboration among security agencies and relevant stakeholders.
He urged members of the task force to carry out their responsibilities with professionalism, discipline and integrity, stressing that sustained cooperation among security agencies is essential to winning the fight against drug abuse.
