Fear spread across the University of Jos (UNIJOS) on Tuesday after the beheaded body of a middle-aged man was discovered on farmland located within the university community.
The victim, whose identity had not been officially confirmed at the time of filing this report, was found with his head missing, leaving students, staff and nearby residents in shock.
A 300-level student of the institution, Pius Atok, said the body was discovered on a farm situated within the university environment.
According to him, information gathered indicated that the deceased was neither a student nor a member of staff of the university.
A senior university official, who spoke anonymously, also confirmed the incident, revealing that preliminary findings suggest the victim was a farmer well known in the area.
The official explained that the man regularly visited the farmland to cultivate crops and was believed to have arrived early Tuesday morning before he was attacked.
He added that the circumstances surrounding the killing remain unclear, but the nature of the incident suggests the attackers deliberately targeted the victim before fleeing with his severed head.
The university source disclosed that the victim’s family had been informed and arrangements were underway to evacuate his remains.
The official also said the university management was aware of the incident and that an official statement would be issued through the institution’s Information Directorate.
Meanwhile, efforts to obtain confirmation from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the command’s spokesperson could not be reached at the time of reporting.
The gruesome discovery has sparked concern among members of the university community, with many calling for a thorough investigation to uncover those responsible
