Thousands of students in Akwa Ibom State are set to benefit after Governor Umo Eno approved the release of ₦1.3 billion for bursary payments while increasing the bursary award from ₦20,000 to ₦50,000 per student.
The approval, announced on Tuesday, is part of the state government’s efforts to ease the financial burden on students and improve access to higher education.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, the government said the initiative reflects Governor Eno’s commitment to investing in education and empowering young people across the state.
According to the statement, eligible students will receive the enhanced bursary under the new payment structure, representing a 150 percent increase from the previous amount.
The government described the move as a major investment in the future of Akwa Ibom students, noting that the intervention is aimed at helping beneficiaries cope with rising educational expenses while encouraging more young people to pursue tertiary education.
It added that education remains one of the key priorities of Governor Eno’s administration, with continued efforts to strengthen human capital development through impactful policies and programmes.
The state government also reaffirmed its commitment to creating more opportunities for youths by supporting initiatives that promote academic excellence, skills development and sustainable growth.
The bursary programme is expected to provide financial relief to thousands of eligible students studying in various higher institutions across Nigeria.
