Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo has suffered a heartbreaking loss after his wife and two young children were confirmed dead following the devastating earthquakes that rocked Venezuela earlier this week.
Trejo, who plays for Club Sport MarÃtimo La Guaira, had spent three days searching through the rubble for his family before rescue workers recovered their bodies, bringing a tragic end to the desperate search.
The club confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement shared on Instagram, expressing deep sorrow over the death of the player’s wife, Yanina, and their two children, Aaron and Ainhoa.
According to reports, the 38-year-old footballer was attending a team training camp in Caracas when the twin earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, struck on Wednesday evening.
Trejo immediately travelled back to La Guaira, one of the areas worst affected by the disaster, only to discover that the building where his family lived had been completely destroyed.
His brother-in-law, Ricardo Ardiles, described the scene as devastating, saying there was virtually nothing left of the building after the powerful quakes.
The tragedy comes as Venezuelan authorities continue rescue and recovery efforts following the disaster, which has claimed nearly 1,500 lives, while tens of thousands of people remain missing.
Emergency responders are still searching collapsed buildings as families across the country continue hoping for news of their loved ones.
The death of Trejo’s family has sparked an outpouring of sympathy from football fans, teammates and members of the sporting community, who have offered condolences to the Argentine player during one of the darkest moments of his life.
