South Africa’s impressive 2026 FIFA World Cup journey came to an end on Sunday after suffering a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Canada in the Round of 32.
The tightly contested encounter looked destined for extra time until Stephen Eustaquio scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to send the tournament co-hosts into the last 16 for the first time in their history.
Both nations were making their maiden appearance in the World Cup knockout stage, with Canada dominating possession and creating several scoring opportunities throughout the match.
Canada nearly took the lead in the first half when Derek Cornelius missed a close-range header from an Eustaquio free-kick, while South Africa threatened occasionally on the counterattack.
Just before halftime, Canada came close again as Moise Bombito’s header was cleared off the line before goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced another brilliant save to keep the African side in the contest.
After the break, Canada continued to pile on the pressure, with substitute Tani Oluwaseyi and Jonathan David both denied by Williams and South Africa’s resilient defence.
The introduction of Alphonso Davies in the closing stages added fresh energy to Canada’s attack, with the Bayern Munich star creating several dangerous opportunities.
The breakthrough finally arrived in stoppage time when Jacob Shaffelburg delivered a cross that was only partially cleared. Eustaquio controlled the loose ball before firing a powerful first-time strike into the bottom corner to seal Canada’s historic victory.
The win sends Canada into the Round of 16, where they will face either Morocco or the Netherlands on July 4, while South Africa bow out after an encouraging campaign.
