Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has made a bold statement ahead of his side’s crucial World Cup clash with England, describing it as the “easiest type of game” to prepare for.
The experienced Portuguese tactician believes matches against football powerhouses naturally motivate players, eliminating the need for extra encouragement from the coaching staff.
Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s showdown in Boston, Queiroz said facing a team of England’s reputation brings out the best in players because everyone is already eager to perform on the biggest stage.
“This is the easiest type of match, because when you’re about to play against England, France or Germany, you don’t need to say anything to the players. They’re fully motivated.”
Ghana head into the encounter full of confidence after opening their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama.
A win against England would secure the Black Stars a place in the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time since 2010.
Despite England’s impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening game, Queiroz insisted that past results and reputation will not decide the outcome of the match.
The 73-year-old coach, who is managing at his fifth World Cup, stressed that teamwork, discipline and determination will be crucial if Ghana are to pull off an upset.
In one of the most memorable moments from his pre-match remarks, Queiroz reminded reporters that Ghana would not be intimidated by England’s famous Three Lions emblem.
“We know they have the three lions on their shirt, but we come from Ghana and have 33 million lions to fight for this game.”
The veteran coach is also expected to welcome midfielder Thomas Partey back into the squad after he missed Ghana’s opening match.
With a place in the last 32 potentially at stake, all eyes will be on Boston as Ghana attempt to write another memorable chapter in their World Cup history.
