The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured victory in the Ondo South Senatorial District by-election, with its candidate, Dayo Faduyile, emerging winner after Saturday’s poll.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the result on Sunday at the collation centre in Okitipupa Local Government Area, confirming Faduyile as the candidate with the highest number of votes.
According to the Returning Officer, Professor Gbenga Solomon-Ibileye, Faduyile polled 68,474 votes to clinch the senatorial seat.
His closest challenger, Adeolu Akinwunmi of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), secured 1,411 votes, while candidates of other parties trailed behind.
The by-election was conducted across six local government areas in Ondo South Senatorial District, including Okitipupa, Ilaje, Ese-Odo, Irele, Odigbo and Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo.
INEC disclosed that a total of 70,770 votes were cast during the election, with 602 votes rejected.
Speaking after the announcement, Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mutiu Agboke, described the exercise as an important test run ahead of the 2027 general elections. He noted that lessons learnt from the process would help improve future electoral operations.
The senatorial seat became vacant following the appointment of former senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
With the victory, Faduyile is set to represent Ondo South in the Senate, succeeding Ibrahim in the Red Chamber.
