Former Edo State Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s handling of Nigeria’s security challenges, insisting that the President possesses the political will needed to tackle insecurity.
Oshiomhole made the remarks in Abuja during the launch of a book authored by the FCT Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Olusola Odumosu.
Responding to criticisms that the government lacks the determination to address rising cases of banditry, kidnapping, terrorism and oil theft, the former labour leader argued that Tinubu has demonstrated commitment through funding, policy decisions and leadership actions.
“The President has political will in abundance,” Oshiomhole said.
According to him, the administration has provided additional funding for security operations and approved supplementary budgets to strengthen the fight against criminal activities across the country.
He also pointed to the replacement of security chiefs and the declaration of a state of emergency as evidence that the President is taking decisive steps to improve national security.
While defending the government, Oshiomhole acknowledged that challenges may exist in the implementation of directives issued from the top levels of command.
He suggested that authorities should examine whether security personnel on the frontlines have the resources, motivation and support required to carry out their assignments effectively.
The senator further called for greater cooperation among security agencies, stressing that combating insecurity requires a united effort rather than rivalry among institutions.
He also raised concerns about the role and structure of the NSCDC, suggesting that its name may need to be reviewed given the nature of security threats officers confront daily.
Speaking at the event, Commandant Odumosu echoed the need for stronger collaboration among security agencies, describing inter-agency rivalry as one of the major obstacles to effective security operations in Nigeria.
Both men agreed that defeating insecurity requires a coordinated national approach involving all relevant stakeholders.
