The Federal Government has called on Nigerian journalists and media organisations to reduce the prominence given to terrorists, bandits and other criminal groups in news coverage.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the appeal during a national security summit organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja.
According to the minister, while the media has a duty to report events accurately, journalists should avoid unintentionally promoting criminal activities through sensational headlines and excessive publicity.
“Take these terrorists and criminals off your front pages,” Idris urged.
He argued that criminal groups often seek attention and publicity, warning that constant media focus on their activities could serve their interests while overshadowing the efforts of security agencies.
The minister stressed that responsible journalism involves not only reporting facts but also exercising judgment in ways that support national stability and security.
He noted that the government remains committed to protecting press freedom but encouraged journalists to balance public interest with the broader goal of nation-building.
Idris also highlighted recent security gains recorded by Nigerian security forces, including operations against terrorists and bandits, the rescue of kidnapped victims and the dismantling of criminal hideouts.
According to him, inaccurate reporting, misinformation and unverified claims could undermine ongoing security efforts.
The minister further called on media organisations to give greater attention to the sacrifices and achievements of security personnel working across the country.
He maintained that national security remains a collective responsibility and urged all stakeholders to contribute positively to protecting the nation.
Also speaking at the summit, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between security agencies and the media.
He revealed that efforts are ongoing to develop a national security communication framework aimed at improving information sharing while protecting sensitive security operations.
The summit focused on strengthening the relationship between journalists and security agencies in support of national development and public safety.
