The Enugu State Government has cautioned market leaders against closing markets to compel traders to attend a planned political rally in support of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Peter Mbah, warning that violators could face sanctions.
The warning comes amid reports that some market association executives were considering shutting down major markets in the state capital to ensure a large turnout at a solidarity rally organised by the Enugu East Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Friday, the state government distanced itself from the reported plan, insisting that any action capable of disrupting business activities runs contrary to its economic goals and governance policies.
The statement, signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, acknowledged the support shown by traders but stressed that political activities should never come at the expense of citizens’ livelihoods.
According to the government, forcing traders to abandon their businesses for a political event would undermine ongoing efforts to expand the state’s economy and attract investment.
The administration noted that it remains committed to growing Enugu’s economy and maintaining an environment where residents can freely conduct their daily business activities without unnecessary disruptions.
Dr. Agbo also pointed out that the state had previously outlawed illegal sit-at-home actions and would not support any measure that restricts access to markets or public spaces.
Citing constitutional rights, the government emphasized that participation in political activities must be voluntary and that no individual should be coerced into attending any rally or gathering.
The statement further urged traders and residents to ignore any directive ordering market closures and continue their normal activities on Saturday.
Authorities disclosed that security and regulatory agencies have been placed on alert to monitor the situation and ensure compliance across affected areas.
The state government reiterated that anyone found violating the directive or attempting to shut down markets for political purposes would face appropriate sanctions.
