The United States Senate has approved a massive $70 billion funding package aimed at strengthening former President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda, handing Republicans a major victory on one of their key policy priorities.
The legislation, passed on Friday after hours of intense debate and amendment votes, is expected to provide funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the US Border Patrol through the remainder of Trump’s term if it clears the House of Representatives.
The bill now moves to the House, where Republican leaders are hoping for swift approval before it is sent to President Trump for final signing.
The funding package comes months after a partial shutdown involving the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), triggered by disagreements between Republicans and Democrats over immigration enforcement policies.
Democrats had pushed for restrictions on certain immigration tactics, including raids in sensitive locations and the use of face coverings by enforcement officers. However, Republicans rejected those proposals and opted to advance the funding through a budget reconciliation process, allowing them to bypass Democratic opposition.
The Senate vote followed a lengthy “vote-a-rama,” a process that allows lawmakers to introduce and vote on multiple amendments before final passage of a bill.
While the immigration funding ultimately secured approval, the debate exposed divisions within the Republican Party over several controversial proposals linked to Trump’s agenda.
Among the issues that sparked internal disagreements were a proposed compensation fund for individuals who claimed they were unfairly targeted by government investigations and funding previously earmarked for security related to Trump’s planned White House ballroom project.
Several Republican lawmakers publicly distanced themselves from the proposed compensation fund, arguing that it could become politically damaging ahead of future elections.
Democrats also used the debate to argue that Congress should focus more on addressing housing costs, inflation, and other economic concerns rather than increasing spending on immigration enforcement.
In a separate development, some Republicans joined Democrats in supporting efforts to impose tougher sanctions on Russia and expand military financing support for Ukraine, signaling growing differences within the party on foreign policy matters.
Despite the internal disputes, the Senate’s approval of the immigration package marks a significant legislative victory for Trump and his allies, reinforcing immigration enforcement as a central focus of the administration’s agenda.
