The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Benue Zone, has organised a leadership symposium to equip students with knowledge on artificial intelligence, security, democracy and financial literacy as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum.
Held in Makurdi, the symposium brought together student leaders, security experts, academics and financial institutions to prepare young Nigerians for emerging challenges while protecting them from political manipulation and social vices.
Speaking at the event, NANS Secretary-General Nelson Iorkaa said students remain one of the most vulnerable groups during election periods and must be properly informed to avoid being used for unlawful activities.
“We are entering a political season, and students can easily be mobilised for negative purposes. At the same time, the world is rapidly embracing artificial intelligence, and Benue students must not be left behind,” he said.
Officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) advised students to remain security conscious, avoid exposing sensitive information online and steer clear of cultism, cybercrime, drug abuse and examination malpractice.
Technology expert Peters Shakume highlighted the opportunities AI presents in education, research and career development but warned that technology cannot replace hard work, creativity and critical thinking.
Participants also received financial literacy training, while student leaders were encouraged to transfer the knowledge gained to campuses across the state.
Organisers expressed confidence that the initiative would help prepare students for leadership roles, responsible civic participation and success in an increasingly digital world.
