Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has appealed to residents to remain calm and pray for the safe return of the students and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area, insisting that security agencies are working tirelessly behind the scenes to secure their release.
The governor made the appeal during a thanksgiving service held in honour of the outgoing Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, at the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) headquarters in Ibadan.
Speaking on the disturbing incident, Makinde acknowledged the pain and anxiety being experienced by the families of the victims but urged the public to avoid actions that could complicate ongoing rescue efforts.
‘This Is Not The Time For Protests’
Makinde cautioned against staging protests over the abduction, arguing that such actions could unintentionally encourage the kidnappers and make the situation more difficult to manage.
According to him, terrorists and bandits do not operate with normal reasoning, and public demonstrations at this stage may only serve to boost their confidence rather than help bring the victims home.
The governor stressed that government officials and security agencies are actively working to ensure the abducted children and teachers are rescued safely.
Governor Calls For Unity And Prayer
While assuring residents that no effort is being spared, Makinde emphasized the importance of unity, patience, and prayer during the difficult period.
He said the focus should be on supporting ongoing operations rather than assigning blame, expressing confidence that the victims would eventually return safely to their families.
The governor also called for divine intervention, noting that beyond security operations, prayers remain important in the fight against insecurity.
Tribute To Outgoing Head Of Service
Beyond addressing the security situation, Makinde used the occasion to celebrate Mrs. Olubunmi Oni on her 60th birthday and retirement from public service after 34 years.
He praised her dedication, professionalism, and commitment to service, describing her career as a shining example for younger civil servants.
The governor further stated that her appointment as Head of Service was based purely on merit, competence, and years of experience, adding that his administration remains committed to fairness, inclusiveness, and rewarding excellence in public service.
As rescue efforts continue, many families and residents across Oyo State remain hopeful that the abducted students and teachers will soon regain their freedom.
