Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has officially stepped down as the National Chairman of the African Action Congress (AAC) after emerging as the party’s presidential flagbearer for the 2027 elections.
The announcement came shortly after the AAC presidential primaries held in Abuja, where Sowore secured the party’s ticket through a unanimous endorsement by delegates and party leaders.
In a statement released by the party on Tuesday, AAC confirmed that Samuel Ajeigbe has now taken over as the new National Chairman following Sowore’s resignation.
The move signals a major leadership change within the party as preparations for the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum.
Sowore was presented with the party’s flag in front of supporters and delegates from across the country, with cheers filling the venue after his emergence as the party’s candidate.
While accepting the nomination, the activist said the AAC was created to build a better Nigeria free from corruption, insecurity, and bad governance. He also praised party members for remaining loyal despite the country’s economic struggles and political pressure.
Sowore didn’t hold back during his speech, as he also criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the party of misleading Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.
Reacting to claims that over 10 million APC members participated in President Bola Tinubu’s primary election, Sowore dismissed the figures and questioned the credibility of the numbers.
“There is no way APC can have 10 million members. I can guarantee you that APC cannot even boast of 10,000 members,” he said.
The development has already sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians reacting to Sowore’s latest political move ahead of the next presidential race.
