Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has strongly denied claims that he is secretly supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Kwankwaso made the statement during an interview with Global TV on Wednesday night while reacting to comments made by Sanusi Bature, spokesperson to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf.
Bature had earlier alleged during an Arise News interview that the former Kano governor was indirectly working in favour of Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
But Kwankwaso dismissed the claim completely, describing it as false and misleading.
“I think only foolish people would believe that. We are not working for anybody,” he said during the interview.
The former Minister of Defence, however, admitted that he shares a long-standing friendship with President Tinubu but insisted that personal relationships should not be mistaken for political alliance.
According to him, both men operate under different political ideologies and are pursuing separate political goals.
“Tinubu has been my senior brother and friend for years, but that doesn’t mean we must merge political interests together,” he explained.
Kwankwaso also criticised the current administration, claiming the President may not fully understand the realities Nigerians are facing because of the people surrounding him.
He alleged that some individuals close to the President are contributing to the country’s political and governance challenges.
Speaking further, Kwankwaso confirmed ongoing political discussions within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), revealing that the coalition agreed to support Peter Obi as its preferred southern presidential candidate.
According to him, leaders from different regions met and decided that Obi was the strongest option from the South at the time.
Kwankwaso added that the coalition still has enough time to mobilise support nationwide before the 2027 general election.
His comments are already generating political reactions as conversations around possible alliances and opposition strategies ahead of 2027 continue to intensify.
